Devender Singh…The Painting Genius

“Every artist dips his brush in his own soul and paints his own nature into his pictures”. These words by Henry Ward Beecher come the closest to describing Chandigarh-based artist Devender Singh’s paintings. Devender Singh, a distinguished personality in the field of art was born in Amritsar on 6th November 1947. He inherited the gift of painting from his father Late S. Sewak Singh. After completing his formal education from Bombay, Amritsar, Ludhiana and Chandigarh, he took to the canvas in a big way.

His paintings, in a religious way, bring alive the significant and glorious moments straight out of the Sikh history. He illustrated for the well-known Amar Chitra Katha publications, his comics were most read in the country in late 70’s. Subsequently, the paintings made Devender Singh an internationally renowned artist, making him the foremost recipient of uncountable awards and honours. At present his paintings adorn the walls of many sikh temples and museums across the country and abroad. In 1999 BBC, London made a documentary film on his life.

His best works include a series on ‘Bara Maah’, which is based on compositions on seasons by Guru Nanak in raag Tukhari and Guru Arjun Dev in raag Majh. But Devender Singh’s paintings are not limited to just Sikh history. One of his master pieces featuring Radha and Krishna simply exude brilliance that he possesses.

A self-made man, Devender Singh believes, “If we were to follow Guru Nanak’s one line teaching-kirt karo, naam japo, wand ke khao (work, pray and share)-life would be a utopian dream.” Till his words turn into reality, the man with a golden brush carries on….
